About Chorlton Eats
Chorlton Fairtrade and Food group is an active community group in Chorlton passionate about fair trade and good food. They wanted explore barriers to good food and how to make it easier to eat, cook, shop and grow good, healthy food. They commissioned a consultation from Krata, funded by Food Futures to explore the matter further.
Krata undertook a consultation of the Chorlton community working with young and older people, parents with toddlers and shoppers in Hardy Lane. They worked with Chorlton High School, Chorlton Good Neighbours, Barlow Moor Community Centre and Martin Oldham, Secretary of the Southern Allotments near Nell Lane. The results of the consultations were fed back to the Chorlton Fairtrade and Food Group, Food Futures, the Food Access Group at Manchester City Council and to local community groups and local businesses.
An extract from the report
“People eat healthily when they commit to it and make time in their busy lives for it. This can only come from them. We propose therefore to build on the existing local enthusiasm for good food in one part of Chorlton and enthuse the rest of the community. The solution strategy is to launch a vision stating that ‘Chorlton loves good food’ and implement a series of solutions targeting different community groups and encouraging them to develop a love of good food. This love will foster a keen interest in good food, enhanced by eating, cooking, growing and shopping for tasty ingredients to make tasty meals. People will then seek out and develop their own ideas for acquiring healthy ingredients and good recipes. Their love for food will encourage them to make time to cook and pay more for good quality ingredients. As they develop in their cooking skills, which they can share with friends and family, their love for food will increase. They will communicate their love of food to others widening the ‘food love circle’ to eventually encompass all of Chorlton.” See full report.
